‘A Museum in Baghdad’ is a play written by Hannah Khalil. The story is set in Iraq, during two different periods running consecutively, 1926 and 2006. During both periods, powerful characters are thickening the plot, with one thing in common, the pursuit of Iraq’s glorious history, for different reasons of course.
The following are costume designs for the characters each conforming to their timeframes. The process heavily relied on my background and the way the story resonated with my Iraqi identity. Each character’s personality was studied individually according to the text and history, then applied to the attire of its time period, to create their unique looks. Initially, the designs were colored and presented through traditional mediums for the purposes of the academic assignment. This project was yet another wonderful opportunity I get to celebrate and take pride in where I come from.
